Akaroa’s Canterbury’s oldest settlement. And simply by wandering the charming ‘Rues’ it envelopes visitors in a coddling atmosphere of pioneering heritage and French romanticism.
For bowlers, there’s an added bonus - the Akaroa Bowling Club sits in the village on the corner of Rue Jolie and Rue Brittan.
Our green is open to everyone, to come and try their hand at bowling. Green fees are payable for non-members. We have both new and old-style bowls available for bowlers to use.
Club days are held on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday afternoons from 1.30pm.
Established back in 1906 the Akaroa Bowling Club is a cornerstone of the community. It certainly has the WOW factor, and the club has a membership which knows they have something special. Where else can you try your hand at bowls at the edge of the sea... at the edge of the world!

Our Club was officially opened on 17 December 1917.
The first site was located on a section of land purchased from the Canterbury Provincial Council in 1851 by Captain Stephan Fisher that became known as the Fisher Estate. The green was situated between Fisher Avenue and Waimea Terrace.
The Club developed over the following years with a lot of fund raising and hard work by a devoted group of members. Even in those early days the Club was very innovative with a lobby for daylight saving in 1922 which was introduced in 1928. In 1923 saw the installation of electric lighting followed by the establishment of our Women’s club in 1931 – the first women’s club in Christchurch.
The year of 1947 saw the opening of the green on our present site with an ex army hut as the pavilion. This remained the facilities we used through to the building of our present pavilion in 1961. The army hut was removed to become the scout den in Centarus Road. The foundations for the new pavilion were laid in June 1961 with the opening taking place in April 1962. A feat to be wondered at today for something as large as this to be completed in such a short time by volunteer labour of club members.
We continued to operate from both sites up until 1976 with the original site reverting back to the City Council and this was then on sold for private housing. One of the major things missing from our present site was the unique sheltered setting we had at the old site. This environment enabled the club to hold lighted green tournaments two nights a week for many years playing through till 10.30pm, these were both enjoyable and very competitive. With players from all over Christchurch entering it was sad that this was lost.
Over the years since we have been based in Waimea Terrace many upgrades to all areas of the property have taken place making our present facilities one of the most up to date clubs in Christchurch.
Since our establishment we have had many of the countries top players representing our club. The Club has been successful in wining many centre and even New Zealand titles with members representing our club at both centre and New Zealand level. This is something our present members and I am sure our founders would all be justly proud.
In 2009 the club excelled by achieving the title of “Club of the Year” across New Zealand as did Barry in being named “Administrator of the Year”. Add to this was the awards of a “Club Gold Award” from Bowls New Zealand and a “Gold Mark Award” from Sport Canterbury.
We were then to create history in the bowling world as a club when we were awarded the title of Club of the Year for a second year (in a row) – a feat we can all be justly proud.
As a progressive club we proudly promoted a very successful Crack a Jack Bowls for non bowlers with over 300 players enjoying the fun with many now members of our club. The on green training and coaching for all members along with performance based selection of teams has given all members an equal chance to progress in our sport.
As we look to the future we are focusing on growing our club in the community of South Christchurch, making our club a true community assest.

The Belfast Bowling Club was founded in 1919, is now based on the present site which can be found on Main North Road. This land was leased from the Waimari Country Council which is now amalgamated with the Christchurch City Council. The ladies section commenced 1955 and amalgamated with the men’s club in 2000. The present clubrooms and facilities are a result of many hours of voluntary work in the late seventies and early eighties, with further renovation as recent as 2022. Our Club green is recognised as one of the best surfaces in the Canterbury Centre.
The club has had many successes over the years in winning many competitions, including the Men’s Sevens thirteen out of 20 years in the late 1990’s and 2000’s. In the 2023/24 season Belfast won the Men's Watson Shield for the first time in nearly 20 years, a prestigious trophy in Canterbury Bowls. Membership growth in recent years to circa 140 across all membership types is testament to the enjoyment of membership at Belfast Bowling Club.
The club provides bowls to a diverse membership and range of skill levels. Open competition (men’s & women’s), over 60 and juniors are all catered for and a limited membership which allows use of the green but no entry to competition play. Social members are also welcome to enjoy the comradery of the club. Club night is Thursday night with the kitchen open throughout the year offering an assortment of quality meals and the chance to stay connected especially over the winter months when the green is closed.

Founded during the Great War, in July 1914, by a group of New Brighton businessmen led by one Captain A W Owles, the club has outlived most of its contemporaries and is one of the oldest in Christchurch. The club is now 110 years old and still going strong.
The site of the bowling club has been the same since 1914 – at 24 Hood Street with an entrance off 21 Mafeking Street.
Following the magnitude 7.2 earthquake in September 2010, the then President was approached by the New Brighton RSA to sharing our building and, after consultation, the Executive agreed to allow the RSA to join as Social members with no voting rights.
Our mission is to provide a supportive environment for everyone in the community with quality lawn bowling experience that is fun, safe and friendly.
Integrity, caring and respect is something we hold dear and we expect all who come to the club to enjoy the hospitality we have to offer and behave accordingly.

The club was formally established on May 22, 1905, with the goal of creating a combined sports club that included lawn bowls, tennis, croquet, and billiards. The opening event, held in perfect weather, saw over 300 members and guests enjoying the day, with all three tennis courts, five croquet lawns, and the full-size, eight-rink bowling green filled with enthusiastic players. The Rangiora Brass Band also performed, adding to the festive atmosphere. Today, with a membership of around 100, the club remains committed to providing excellent facilities for its members, guests, and families.
Our aim is to become a pre-eminent Canterbury club, continuing our long tradition of fostering a welcoming and vibrant community for all who enjoy the sport of lawn bowls and other recreational activities.

St. Martins Bowls (Inc.) is a progressive club catering for bowls and the community.
Often described by first time visitors as “a hidden gem”, St. Martins Bowls (Inc.) is located in a secluded corner of St. Martins Park with ample parking, indoor and outdoor seating, attractive surrounds and views to the Port Hills.
Today the Club enjoys the facilities built in the Club’s heyday: two greens, one artificial (established 1997, catering for all-year-round play and available for ‘casual’ and ‘corporate’ bowls events) as well as a lawn green recently developed to the highest standard. Supporting the greens, the Club has a pavilion (hall and fully equipped kitchen), BBQ and two ‘clubrooms’ (one for each green). The main Clubroom includes a licensed bar. There is ample parking for a mobile catering service for groups who choose this option.
We cater for all types of players: those who play for fun and fellowship as well as those who have a more competitive streak! It’s the friendly Club with an eye on the future. We have solar panels to help the environment and the Club’s financial security; a quality artificial green catering for all-year-round play and over 400 casual players per year; as well as a plan to further develop the lawn green to cater for national events (which the Club did regularly through the 1980’s and 90’s).
The Club welcomes new members; bowls and coaching are free. Participation builds fellowship and friendships. Our club exists through the work of our many volunteers.
Join us for fun, for competition, for fellowship or all of these; your participation will take St. Martins Bowls to a future that reflects the Club’s illustrious past.
The Club’s facilities are available for hire.

History of St Martins Bowling Club
On 10 March 1949 Mr H.H. Hey chaired a meeting in the St. Martins Library to establish a bowling club. Most of the 60 persons present became members. In May, St. Martins Bowling Club asked Council for the provision of land for two greens on the reserve off Gamblins Rd. The first green was laid in 1951, and the Club was opened 6 December 1952 by Mayor R.M. MacFarlane and Mabel Howard (MP) following the official opening of St. Martins Park.
The pavilion (hall and kitchen) was opened by Mayor MacFarlane13 Oct.,1956.
The inaugural meeting of the Women’s Club was held 7 Nov. 1957 with 24 members who were to be wives of members of the Men’s Club or members of St. Martins Indoor Bowling Club. In March 1962 a delegation from the Men’s Club proposed the formation
of an independent Women’s Club taking over the vacant land adjoining the Men’s green. It would mean an increase in membership to 60 or 70 members. The new green was opened in 1965 with Win Evans becoming President. She later became a NZ Councillor in 1988, Vice President of the NZ Women’s Bowling Assoc. in 1992 and later its President.
The two Clubs reached peak memberships of 100 plus (Men) and 80 plus (Women) and continued to have a close relationship with the women doing the catering and the men looking after the greens and buildings. The Clubs regularly hosted either the Men’s or the Women’s “Dominion” (now National) Tournament between 1983 and 1999.
With declining memberships, in 1999 discussions began to consider the amalgamation of the Men’s and Women’s Clubs culminating in the formation of St. Martins Bowls (Inc.) in 2001.
Today the Club has a stable membership of around 60 members (roughly equal numbers of men and women). The facilities are maintained to high standards. The Club’s finances are healthy. All is set for a boost in membership to make the most of a bright future.
